The HKFYG Jockey Club Organic Farm (the “Farm”), located in Pat Heung, Yuen Long, marked its official opening following a major redevelopment at a ceremony today (31 October).
Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the HKFYG’s three-year Jockey Club Climate Smart Agriculture Educational Project included the upgrading of the Farm, integrating smart agriculture, green building design and renewable energy to foster sustainable living through food production, education and hands-on learning. In addition, the project offers educational activities to deepen public understanding of climate change and food systems.
Officiating guests at the ceremony included Diane Wong Shuk-han, Acting Secretary for Environment and Ecology of the HKSAR Government; Philip Lo Kai-wah, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club; Legislative Council Members Chan Pok-chi and Chong Ho-fung; Mickey Lai Kin-ming, Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation; and Imma Ling Kit-sum, President of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG). They were joined by representatives from the business and education sectors, as well as students, to witness this important milestone in the Farm’s development.
Imma Ling Kit-sum, President of HKFYG, said, “In the face of climate change, resource constraints and challenges to the global food system, it is increasingly important to nurture environmental awareness and sustainability literacy among young people and the wider public.” She noted that the Farm-to-Table experiences helped participants better understand where their food comes from how everyday choices affect the environment, turning awareness into practical habits.
Philip Lo Kai-wah, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, said that through its support for the redevelopment and enhancement of the Farm, the Club hopes to inspire young people to harness technology to tackle climate challenges, value food and natural resources, and make more sustainable choices in their everyday lives. He emphasised the Club will continue to advance sustainability as one of its impact programmes. Through cross-sector collaboration, innovation and community education, the Club will promote carbon and waste reduction, support biodiversity conservation, and enhance the community’s resilience to climate change.
The Farm focuses on three themes: Smart Agriculture, Low-carbon Diets and Renewable Energy. Its smart systems and experiential activities demonstrate how technology can improve resource efficiency, while encouraging support for local produce to reduce associated carbon emissions, along with promoting low-carbon living through everyday actions.
Covering approximately 160,000 square feet, the Farm features IoT sensors, artificial intelligence, data monitoring and smart farm management systems. A teaching kitchen, classrooms and other learning facilities support sustainable programmes for schools and recreational farming experiences for the public. The Farm is expected to welcome more than 900,000 visitors annually.
The Farm is Hong Kong’s first organic farm to hold both the Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre Certification and the USDA Organic Certification. It is also the first farm approved by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department to join its “Farm+ Scheme”.
