This exploratory study looks at how recent young arrivals from Mainland China adapt to Hong Kong. Those under study are aged between 10 and 18 and have been in Hong Kong for less than 2 years. Altogether 51 recent arrivals and 21 parents were interviewed. The result of the findings shows the unique characteristics of recent arrivals from Mainland China, their difficulties in adjustment, communication and most of all schooling problems: unable to enroll quickly or forced to down-grade. There are also discussions on factors hindering the development of interpersonal relationships and the use of social services. Worthy to read.
