What's new

History

The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups has been involved in various district and Hong Kong wide youth research projects for the last ten years. A  youth research team was established in 1993, which developed three different series of youth studies for the Federation. A Youth Research Centre, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, was put into operation in May 1996 and moved the Federation's youth research into a new era.

Objectives

The aims and objectives of the Youth Research Centre are:
1. To conduct and encourage youth research into all areas of social, political and economic life, on which the values, behaviors, needs and problems encountered by the young people in Hong Kong are then able to be ascertained;
2. To provide the public information on young people through timely and quality youth studies;
3. To maximize and share research resources by cooperation or joint ventures with local or overseas youth research institutions or agencies.

Scope of Service:

1. To conduct and publish youth research reports:

There are five major lines of youth research work:

(a) Youth Poll Series

Since January 1993, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups has been conducting a series of monthly youth polls by telephone survey in order to ascertain how young people behave in certain situations, and where they stand on a variety of topical issues of a social and political nature. The findings are released to the press and reports are submitted to relevant government departments, non-governmental organizations and interested bodies.

(b) Youth Study Series

In order to comprehend youth phenomena and problems more fully, in-depth studies are conducted through case studies or large scale surveys. Since 1993, more than ten youth studies were completed. The findings and recommendations were released at luncheon seminars and were very well received by policy-makers, government officials, education personnel and social work professionals. It is hoped that the youth study series will be useful in the formulation of youth policies and the planning of youth services.

(c) Hong Kong Youth Trends Series

A sound grasp of youth trends allows monitoring of policies and services to be done in a more co-coordinated way.  The objective of publishing Hong Kong Youth Trends Series is to provide both the public and policy makers with an up-dated and in-depth gauge of youth dynamics and development.  By crystallizing various research efforts on youth issues and with references made to surveys conducted by the Federation on young people's attitudes, the Report attempts to benchmark the face and attitude of youth.  Trend analyses, policy discussions and recommendations were also incorporated for easy comprehension.  The first issue was published in October 1999.

(d) Current Issues Monitor

In order to respond to social issues more swiftly and to gather opinions from a wider scope, the Centre launched the captioned in April 2000.  "Current Issues Monitor", collecting views through Territory-wide telephone surveys, will have 3 major characteristics.  Firstly, topics will be on youth related hot issues.  Secondly, targets of survey include not only the young people, but also their significant others and the public.  Thirdly, the survey results, in form of easy-reading tables, will be published via the internet.  This signifies a breakthrough in our way of disseminating the research results.

(e) Journal of Youth Studies

The objective of publishing the Journal of Youth Studies is to provide a forum for professional discussion on youth policies so as to advocate for better legislation and policies for youth services.  Besides regular readers on our subscription list, the Journal is circulated to government departments, policy-makers, education institutes, social service organizations, academics and experts, as well as university libraries in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore and other countries.

2. To encourage youth studies through commission or joint ventures

The Youth Research Centre has continued to keep close contact with research bodies in universities, youth service agencies, professional bodies, welfare organizations and government departments. When appropriate, the Centre will accept commission or joint ventures to conduct youth research on suitable topics in response to the changing needs of young people in Hong Kong.

3. To develop a youth data bank through an exchange of research efforts

In order to consolidate research efforts on youth studies, the Youth Research Centre has continued to organize exchange activities with researchers, academics, youth workers and administrators in various places through visits, publications or seminars. The objective of the exchange is to develop a youth data bank which will be an important reference for youth policy formulation and service development.

4. To disseminate research information through internet

The latest research information of the Youth Research Centre, such as releases of the most recent youth studies, seminars, activities, topics undergoing or a full list of reports with order forms are now accessible through the internet at the web site of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. This will facilitate the public to obtain youth information if they are so interested.

5. To keep track of youth opinions through telephone and net-survey

The Youth Research Centre has established its own computerized telephone survey system which is catered for Hong Kong wide random sampling opinion polls. The Centre has also developed an internet questionnaire device for general mood tests or opinion collection. Through both telephone and net-survey, the Centre will be able to continue to gauge the opinions of young people on various topical issues.

Who can use the Centre?

The Youth Research Centre is open to the public. Individuals are welcome to the Centre in person to read or order youth research reports. Organizations are welcome to contact the Centre for commission or joint venture on research projects.
