Mystic beliefs which exist both in primitive cultures and advanced civilizations constitute part of the Chinese culture. Such beliefs in the dominance of external forces may be significant to young peopleˇ¦s self-theory, behavior as well as their relationship with others. This study indicates that young people in Hong Kong have few experiences in making contact with the spiritual world and most of them have never been disturbed by tales of ghosts. Though most youngsters feel that part of their lives have been preordained by fate, they still believe that they are generally in control of their own lives. Religious beliefs, as revealed in this survey, make life different by the faith in the external control and a meaningful existence of life.
