One year before the transfer of sovereignty on 1 July 1997, this youth poll finds that almost half of the respondents would like to learn Putonghua in order to prepare themselves for the changeover. Some 37.5% say that they will earn more money whereas around 30 per cent will understand the Basic Law and learn more about China. Most of the respondents said they were confident about the long-term future of Hong Kong although they had less confidence in Hong Kongˇ¦s political situation in the short-run.
