Young People Views on Marriage and Having Children

The decision to get married and have children is one of the most important in one's life. This survey shows that more than 36 per cent of the respondents give their ideal age for marriage as between 25 and 27, while another similar percentage chose 28 to 30. Reasons for the choice include financially capable, more mature and independent, right time or can go further ahead in their career. About 57 per cent are willing to live with family members of the older generation after they get married. Three-quarters agreed that two is enough for the number of children they want and no preference for a boy or a girl. About 28 per cent would consider adopting children or artificial insemination if they or their spouse were unable to have children. Near 80 per cent agreed that marriage is a commitment, now and forever. Yet three-quarters thought divorce is a reasonable decision if there is breakdown of relationship or spouse is unfaithful.
